A new version of HDMI may be released soon.

summation

  • The next-generation HDMI 2.2 display standard is rumored to debut at CES 2025.
  • HDMI 2.2 features “increased bandwidth” that allows for higher resolutions and refresh rates than the current HDMI 2.1 standard, but exact specifications have not been released.
  • HDMI 2.1 allows up to 4K 120Hz without compression, so HDMI 2.2 can target 4K 360Hz as well as 8K 144Hz.

According to a recent report HDMI 2.2 The next-generation specification for the popular display technology is expected to feature higher resolutions and refresh rates than the current HDMI 2.1 standard and a new boot cable.

Released in 2017, HDMI 2.1 has long been the dominant display interface and can be found in high-end monitors and TVs, as well as modern consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. HDMI 2.1 is especially great for gaming, as it supports resolutions and refresh rates of up to 4K 120Hz uncompressed at up to 48Gbps bandwidth, and can go up to a whopping 10K 100Hz when display stream compression is included. These specifications have not yet been saturated by the graphics cards and displays currently available, but the HDMI standard seems ready to take the next step forward regardless.

ASUS' latest monitor brings dual-mode refresh rate to mainstream gamers

ASUS will unveil seven new monitors at CES 2025, including a 4K IPS gaming monitor with dual-mode 4K (160Hz) and 1080p (320Hz) displays.

According to an HDMI Forum press release obtained by Italian website Digital Day: HDMI 2.2 is scheduled to debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2025.. The exact specifications of HDMI 2.2 will likely be saved for a tech event, but the press release notes that the next-generation HDMI interface will offer “increased bandwidth” over HDMI 2.1 and support a “wider range” of higher resolutions and refresh rates. A new HDMI cable will also be introduced with HDMI 2.2 to enable the claimed upgrade.

Next-generation HDMI 2.2 spec reportedly set to debut at CES 2025

Outside of a very few enthusiasts, most gamers have yet to take full advantage of the HDMI 2.1 standard, so it will be interesting to see how much further HDMI 2.2 pushes the technological envelope. There are also backwards compatibility issues between HDMI 2.2 ports and older HDMI versions. It's not yet confirmed, but backwards compatibility may be in the cards if HDMI 2.2 uses the same signaling system as its predecessor at a higher bandwidth. With HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.0 already supporting 4K 120Hz, HDMI 2.2 can achieve display goals such as 4K 360Hz or 8K 144Hz.

Additionally, the launch of HDMI 2.2 could coincide perfectly with other hardware announcements at CES 2025. AMD is strongly rumored to launch its RDNA 4 graphics card at CES 2025, while Nvidia is also expected to unveil its 50 series graphics card at the event. With both manufacturers competing fiercely for the GPU market, it will be interesting to see if either manufacturer complies with the HDMI 2.2 standard to signal its readiness for future display technology.
