Battlefield 6 players are experiencing strict IP takedowns on the portal

When Battlefield 6 launched earlier this month, one of the first things new players did was check out Portal, a platform that lets you create mods, maps, and other weird stuff to your heart's content. Naturally, this immediately took the form of recreating some of Call of Duty's greatest maps. Because there's nothing cooler than experiencing a rival's best map in your own game.

But as soon as players started getting nostalgic, EA and Activision stepped up to threaten bans and enforce IP infringement notices if players didn't edit their maps. Fast forward to today, and one Battlefield 6 player documented a situation where he was continuing to receive IP infringement notices even after taking action on the infringing items.

What started out as a novel idea turned into chaos.

On Reddit, user HearMeOut-13 provided a status update about his COD Zombies-inspired creation titled “Project Osiris.” The creation, which seeks to emulate the popular wave-based zombies mode, immediately went viral before drawing the ire of Activision itself.

The first takedown, which occurred on October 23, forced the creators to rename all aspects of the mode to avoid infringing on Activision's ownership of elements such as “Juggernog”.

Sounds good enough, right? Well, you're wrong.

On October 30, the creator revealed that he had received another IP infringement notice, this one reportedly containing no actual IP to be infringed.

“No COD trademarks. No copyrighted assets. Just gameplay mechanics,” they wrote about the rebrand. “They can no longer claim trademark infringement. There is no trademark. They can't claim asset theft. I built everything into Portal's tools.”

Their creations are currently inaccessible. Because of how vague the original notice was, it is unclear what is being infringed at this time. After all, wave-based mods existed before COD and will exist long after COD, so the whole situation is pretty disappointing for the community trying to create fun with the tools in front of them.
