Leveling characters, Light Cones, Relics, Traces, and acquiring Eidolons all play a part in Honkai: Star Rail‘s progression system. All of them ensure players can keep up with the increasing difficulty as the Trailblaze level increases, and when challenging endgame content. It goes without saying that relics play an important role in optimizing a team’s performance in combat. Sometimes it may feel as if players aren’t able to output enough damage or perhaps a support character is lacking in SPD. While the main and sub-stats of relics matter as this is where characters will gain all the necessary stats they would want, equipping the right relic set onto a character is equally as important.
When farming and leveling relics, players will have to face the might of RNG in 5 different areas. Which relic set will drop, which piece will drop, which main stat it would be, which sub-stats it would have, and which sub-stats get leveled up. Just by taking this into consideration, it’s easy to see that optimizing relic stats would take an absurd amount of time. Therefore, it may be useful for some players to know which relic sets are the most optimal to farm (those that benefit the most characters) from the Cavern of Corrosion which can drop 2 different relic sets each.
10 Path Of Conflagration
Wastelander Of Banditry Desert & Firesmith Of Lava-Forging
Wastelander Of Banditry Desert |
Firesmith Of Lava-Forging |
Starting off the list with a relic set from version 1.0, it’s no surprise that these sets have all but been replaced by newer ones that focus more on a specific mechanic. The Wastelander set is intended to be used by an Imaginary DPS unit. While the 2-Pc bonus is pretty good as it can benefit any Imaginary DPS, the 4-Pc bonus is what holds it back as only Welt is able to take full advantage of it. Even then, every character who can make use of this set would prefer other ones, including Welt. Although the performance of this set isn’t too far behind the other ones, it makes for an undesirable set as the same point applies to the Firesmith set as well.
Similar to the Wastelander set, the 2-Pc bonus on the Firesmith set is good but held back by the 4-Pc bonus as well. However, the 4-Pc bonus can benefit any Fire DPS. The only problem with it is the 12% Fire DMG increase after using an Ultimate. The idea for this set is to use it on a Fire DPS that heavily relies on their Skill to deal damage (similar to Jingliu with her enhanced Skill), but there aren’t any aside from Firefly who would much prefer to be on a Break build. Even then, that extra 12% increase is only applied to the next attack instead of lasting for 2 turns for example. This makes it a lackluster set overall.
9 Path Of Jabbing Punch
Thief Of Shooting Meteor & Champion Of Streetwise Boxing
Thief Of Shooting Meteor |
Champion Of Streetwise Boxing |
The Thief set is quite a good set for any Break oriented units, with DPS units able to reliably and fully take advantage of the 4-Pc bonus. Both support and DPS Break units would often prefer other sets over this one, but it’s still a nice option if players don’t have many pieces of the other sets. This set can also be obtained from completing the weekly Echo of War bosses, so players would more than likely have an abundance of pieces from this set.
The Champion set is tailor-made for Clara as she can easily make use of all its effects. It’s of course the best in slot set for Clara, but also for Argenti, Sushang, and Trailblazer (Physical). This brings up the question of why this is ranked so low on the list if it is best in slot for a number of characters. To put it simply, out of the 4 characters mentioned, only Argenti and Clara have a place in the meta. Unless players are specifically trying to build them, there isn’t much else to gain from farming it. Not to mention, the other set it’s paired with can also be obtained by doing weekly bosses.
8 Path Of Drifting
Musketeer Of Wild Wheat & Passerby Of Wandering Cloud
Musketeer Of Wild Wheat |
Passerby Of Wandering Cloud |
The Musketeer set has maintained a level of viability since version 1.0 as the 12% ATK increase is extremely flexible and can benefit almost every DPS unit (and a few supports). While not many would necessarily want the 4-Pc bonus, this set is often used for its 2-Pc bonus alongside another set’s 2-Pc bonus (as in the case with a kit like Robin’s which heavily favors ATK). The flexible 2-Pc bonus also means that it makes for great temporary relics when farming for better ones. Similar to the Thief set, it can also be acquired by defeating weekly bosses.
Passerby of Wandering Cloud is the best in slot relic set for all but 1 Abundance unit (Gallagher), with some preferring to only use the 2-Pc bonus and others using the 4-Pc bonus. It’s worth mentioning that both the 2-Pc and 4-Pc bonus can work and be viable on any of the Abundance units, but Skill Point hungry units being used in Skill Point hungry teams would prefer to use the 4-Pc bonus. The only reason it ranks low is due to this set being used by Abundance units. Not many players will want to fully optimize their healers or sustain units in general, so farming a bit for this set and getting the necessary main stats and a few SPD sub-stats would be enough for most players. With the Musketeer set being obtainable through weekly bosses, there isn’t much use to farming these two sets outside of building healers.
7 Path Of Holy Hymn
Band Of Sizzling Thunder & Knight Of Purity Palace
Band Of Sizzling Thunder |
Knight Of Purity Palace |
The Thunder set performs very well on every Lightning DPS due to the simple 2-Pc bonus but especially the 4-Pc bonus. Although the 20% ATK increase only lasts for 1 turn, DPS units would want to use their Skill on every turn anyway to maximize damage output which basically means this is a permanent buff throughout the entire battle if played optimally. The only problem with it is that it is only the best in slot set for Arlan who is widely regarded as being one of the worst if not the worst character in terms of meta, with the rest of the characters who can use this set preferring other ones.
The Knight set has remained the best in slot set for Preservation units as they can all create shields, with the sole exception being Fu Xuan who sustains the team through other means. This set provides everything needed to increase the sustaining capabilities of shielders by increasing shield strength by 20% on top of the 15% DEF increase, which all shields scale off of as of version 2.5. This set is similar to Passerby of Wandering Cloud in that there’s little reason to continue farming it after building a shielder (unless players are trying to fully optimize builds), even more so when considering it’s paired with a set that’s less preferable to the newer ones.
6 Path Of Gelid Wind
Eagle Of Twilight Line & Hunter of Glacial Forest
Eagle Of Twilight Line |
Hunter Of Glacial Forest |
The Eagle set is mostly used for its 2-Pc bonus when equipped by Wind DPS units as the 4-Pc bonus doesn’t offer much in terms of damage other than them getting their next turn slightly earlier. With a coherent team that is decently built, the 4-Pc bonus is less than desirable when compared to something that could directly affect damage output. However, the 4-Pc bonus could be utilized by any buffer and debuffer in the game even if they aren’t a Wind unit. Although the 2-Pc bonus will be wasted, the 4-Pc bonus effectively allows debuffers to apply even more debuffs and buffers (specifically ones with action advance mechanics) to get more turns to support the team and generate more energy and Skill Points. While it would be less effective than using a set that particularly fits a character’s kit (damage-wise), using the Eagle set in challenge runs or 0-cycle runs in Memory of Chaos is not unheard of.
Hunter of Glacial Forest is similar to Band of Sizzling Thunder as the buffs it provides are very useful to Ice DPS units. As of version 2.5, there are only 4 Ice DPS units with this set being best in slot for Yanqing as well as Jingliu (depending on the battle). It’s difficult to say whether this set will remain relevant for much longer as newer relic sets tend to focus more on a particular mechanic that buffs characters more efficiently. Using Herta as an example, she could absolutely make good use of this set but would prefer a newer one even if the difference isn’t massive. Not to mention, the game is due for another Ice DPS. Looking at recent character releases, a new Ice DPS will more than likely introduce a mechanic or expand on an existing one. It is still an excellent set for current Ice DPS units nonetheless.
5 Path Of Providence
Genius Of Brilliant Stars & Guard Of Wuthering Snow
Genius Of Brilliant Stars |
Guard Of Wuthering Snow |
The Genius set is an interesting one as it offers an extremely powerful buff and is the best in slot set for all of the Quantum units listed. However, in order for it to be the best in slot, it needs to be against enemies weak to Quantum specifically. All of them would prefer other sets against enemies that aren’t weak to Quantum but players who own Silver Wolf can effectively make every enemy weak to Quantum by implanting said weakness onto the enemy. The 4-Pc bonus is so good that even non-Quantum units can make use of it quite well despite the 2-Pc bonus being completely useless on them. Although, this does mean that they can only be put up against enemies that are naturally weak to Quantum if players don’t own Silver Wolf (Firefly, Boothill, and Jingliu wouldn’t want her on their teams anyway).
Guard of Wuthering Snow has its uses but it’s far from being that useful to any players who have a decently built team. If a sustain unit is built decently well, there wouldn’t be a need for damage reduction as the sustain unit should be able to hold the fort themselves. While the extra 5 energy is nice, it’s not enough to make this set desirable. There isn’t any character in the game currently that would want the 4-Pc bonus but the 2-Pc bonus can be viable in certain situations. Fu Xuan makes the best use out of it as she absorbs damage from allies and it can also be used on squishy supports for new players who might struggle with harder content. For more experienced players, this set might come in handy in the higher levels of Divergent Universe for example, but an 8% damage reduction isn’t going to do much against the beasts players will face there. Still, players are going to have at least some pieces from this set from farming the Genius set so it’s there as a backup plan if anything.
4 Path Of Cavalier
The Wind-Soaring Valorous & Iron Cavalry Against The Scourge
The Wind-Soaring Valorous |
Iron Cavalry Against The Scourge |
The Wind-Soaring Valorous is currently the best in slot set for both Yunli and Feixiao, both of these being the only 2 characters who want this set at the moment. This set is best suited to characters who can unleash follow-up attacks while being heavily reliant on their Ultimate to deal damage which perfectly describes their kits. While this set is quite niche currently, HoYoverse has been releasing quite a number of follow-up DPS units recently so there’s a good chance that this set will gain more value in the future.
The Iron Cavalry set was made specifically for Break DPS units. Although there are only 2 dedicated Break DPS units currently, Break teams were only recently introduced in version 2.2 with the release of Boothill. This set is basically guaranteed to get more use in the future as it only makes sense to release more Break-oriented characters. Not to mention, Break teams are extremely powerful as they can be good at minimal investment levels (if a bit limited on team options). If players are struggling to beat Memory of Chaos and Apocalyptic Shadow, this is the team to build.
3 Path Of Dreamdive
Watchmaker, Master Of Dream Machinations & Pioneer Diver Of Dead Waters
Watchmaker, Master Of Dream Machinations |
Pioneer Diver Of Dead Waters |
The Watchmaker set acts as a variation of the Thief set that is intended to be equipped on Break supports. The 4-Pc bonus enables a Break DPS on the team to deal more damage and with the use of Trailblazer (Imaginary), it ultimately enables the entire team to deal more damage through the existence of the Super Break mechanic. Even though the effect can’t be stacked, running this set on 2 supports ensures that the buff reaches as close to 100% uptime as possible. The 2-Pc bonus can also be used in place of the Thief and Iron Cavalry sets as all 3 offer the exact same effect. As a bonus, this set is obtainable through weekly bosses as well.
The Pioneer set can theoretically be used on any DPS if run on a team that consists of at least 1 or 2 debuffers, but they won’t get its full effects and it’s generally a better idea to run at least 1 buffer on a team. Due to this, only a few can fully take advantage of its effects and it’s DPS units that can also apply debuffs themselves. DoT units don’t care for the 4-Pc bonus as they don’t need to worry about CRIT. For the rest of the characters listed, this set performs excellently with it being the best in slot for most of them if the 3 debuffs requirement is maintained. There are special cases like Dr. Ratio’s best performing team which doesn’t consist of any debuffers, but instead focuses on Eidolons and Light Cones to apply debuffs.
2 Path Of Elixir Seekers
Messenger Traversing Hackerspace & Longevous Disciple
Messenger Traversing Hackerspace |
Longevous Disciple |
The Messenger set is an extremely useful support set that focuses on SPD. Players will find that many supports in the game would want at least the 2-Pc bonus from this set in order to meet the recommended SPD breakpoints. It’s highly recommended that supports are built with enough speed to ensure consistent application of buffs and debuffs as well as allowing them to act as efficient Skill Point generators. While the 2-Pc bonus is great, the 4-Pc bonus leaves a lot to be desired. The duration of said buff corresponds to the turn of each individual ally as opposed to the ally that has the set equipped. This ultimately acts as a mini action advance but isn’t enough to amount to anything. However, the 2-Pc bonus being so useful also means that certain DPS units can benefit from this set as well.
Longevous Disciple is largely an underutilized set as only a few characters have any sort of HP mechanic in their kit. This set was made specifically for Blade as he is the only character in the game so far that scales off of HP, but Arlan can also use this set as he depletes his own HP (he doesn’t benefit much from the 12% HP increase though). Fu Xuan makes good use of the 2-Pc bonus as her sustaining capabilities and Ultimate DMG scales off of HP. As for the rest, this set is used similarly to the Guard of Wuthering Snow set in that it offers more survivability to squishy supports. Considering how useful the messenger set is, all the extra pieces from this set can be used as fodder to level or craft relics if nothing else.
1 Path Of Darkness
Prisoner In Deep Confinement & The Ashblazing Grand Duke
Prisoner In Deep Confinement |
The Ashblazing Grand Duke |
The Prisoner set is the dedicated DoT set and is best in slot for every DoT unit in the game. When running DoT teams, having 2 DoT units on the team is pretty much required to do any meaningful damage which is why this set works so well as it’s very easy to hit the requirement for the buffs. For Jiaoqiu specifically, seeing as he has his uses outside of DoT teams, this set may not be the best option for him as it’s quite difficult to get the full effects outside of DoT teams. As for the 2-Pc bonus, it’s the exact same as the Musketeer set so any character who could use a 2-Pc Musketeer, could use this one as well. If players are farming specifically for that 12% ATK bonus, this set is the better option as players would be farming for not only a DoT team but also a follow-up team through the relic set paired with this one as well. Both of which are powerful teams.
Another dedicated set but this time for the follow-up characters, The Ashblazing Grand Duke. The 2-Pc bonus being a simple 20% damage increase is great as every follow-up unit can take advantage of it. The 4-Pc bonus however is a different situation though. It favors characters that either don’t launch follow-up attacks too often (and hit multiple times per follow-up) and therefore don’t rely too much on their follow-up attacks to deal damage, or characters that do rely on their follow-up attacks for damage but hit a bunch of times per follow-up. This means that characters like Dr. Ratio and Clara cannot use this set as their follow-up attacks are used often and only hit once, meaning that they’ll only get a 6% ATK increase as opposed to the maximum 48%. Nonetheless, the 2-Pc bonus will still be good for any future follow-up DPS units.
