Ah, the Zombie trope — it somehow never loses its charm. That’s precisely why the same old theme keeps making creative and successful comebacks. Every demographic enjoys it and is genuinely very thrilling to witness. After all, what person wouldn’t find themselves captivated by a highly improbable fictional scenario where the world is taken over by a virus that turns humans into violent, flesh-eating monsters, leaving only a handful of “chosen ones” to fight them off? It’s all very exciting.
Manhwa are particularly creative when it comes to the zombie trope. They mix and match different themes and come up with the coolest, most intricate stories ever. Some of these hit so hard with the public that they even get adapted into mega-hit Korean dramas. Their art (with their thankfully colored panels), plot, and accessibility contribute to the ultimate well-rounded entertainment experience.

Zombies are a prolific sight in media, including anime. These undead individuals are some of the genre’s most iconic zombies.
Updated October 24, 2024 by Fatima Naeem: Despite zombie-themed content being so common in entertainment, there’s something exceptionally different about the way manhwa portray this genre. Even the dullest manhwa in the scene has unique elements that set it apart from other works. The best part is that the “post-apocalyptic” trope, featuring any sort of undead, otherworldly, or supernatural domination (not necessarily just zombies), is one of the most prevalent themes in the manhwa industry. Even the biggest names in the business incorporate this trope in some way, and it never starts to feel old.

They hold hopes of being rescued from the massive hordes of zombies patrolling outside the school building but have not had any luck yet. Sadly, a seemingly “intelligent” zombie crashes a massive truck through the metal gates guarding the school, allowing all the wild zombies outside to pour in. Status |
Completed |
Shotgun Boy is a Kim Carnby series that acts as a prequel to Sweet Home. Despite that, the manhwa is a complete standalone and has a lot of different themes that give it an edge over other similar manhwa. Specifically, it takes place in an ethically ambiguous setting, and the lead characters make multiple ‘gray’ decisions in order to survive.
The story revolves around a quiet and mistreated high school kid, Gyuhwan, whose only respite from his horrible school life is thinking about the revenge he’ll inflict on his bullies. As the days go by, the bullying inflicted on him becomes worse to the point where he eventually has to run for his life and hide away. One day, while hiding out in the woods, he stumbles upon a shotgun. Thinking enough’s enough, he takes the shotgun and goes back to his campus only to find out it’s been taken over by a strange virus that’s turning everyone into mindless violent creatures.

Happening, or The Happening, is a 2017 zombie apocalypse manhwa that tackles a fairly unconventional idea in an even more unconventional way. It features the themes of emotions and some people’s inability to feel them — mainly, the main character’s. He doesn’t feel many emotions, and even if he does, he doesn’t feel them intensely enough to react. This makes him an easy target for the people of his school to pick on.
Things go wrong when a normal school day in Lee Park’s life becomes an absolute nightmare. He finds himself amidst a large group of exceedingly aggressive people who cannot seem to control their anger bursts and rage and are killing everyone who crosses their path. What makes it even more terrifying is that this condition appears to be contagious, with one of the key symptoms being the infected’s skin turning completely red.

5 Wake Up Deadman
The Main Character Is A Sentient Zombie With A Massive Crush
Writers |
Kim Yeong Hwan (Story & Art) |

Status |

Kim Yeong Hwan’s take on a zombie apocalypse, and consequently on sentient zombies, is a bit more unique than one would expect. Wake Up Deadman is a bizarre manhwa that somehow manages to incorporate themes of a large-scale zombie outbreak with romance, action, comedy, tragedy, and music. On paper, this manhwa has one of the most unconventional premises here.
It follows the one-sided, unreciprocated love of a high-school loner, Sahu, as he tries to find ways to confess to his long-time friend and crush Ju-hyeon. Incidentally, on the day he decides to confess his love, Sahu ends up saving Ju-Hyeon’s life from a truck crash, seemingly losing his own life in the process. However, like all zombie outbreaks, the one in this particular world hits the people like a truck (no pun intended). Instead of dying, Sahu unexpectedly becomes a zombie with all his memories and intelligence intact. He’s now determined to seek Ju-Hyeon out and do what he’s wanted to do for a long time.

3 Polar Night
Zombie Outbreak Set In Antarctica
Writers |
Hankeunbit (Story & Art) |
---|---|
Status |
Completed |
Polar Night is an action horror manhwa with intense artwork and a pretty straightforward premise that works for everything it offers. Unlike a lot of other manhwa, it doesn’t exactly have any intelligent zombies or sentimental plotlines to drive its progression. Instead, it follows a simple, good old zombie vs. human narrative. What sets it apart, however, is its unique setting. Rather than taking place in Korea, the story is set in a research facility in Antarctica, where the main character encounters his first undead creature.
Cha Dong-hwan is a cold, emotionally distant firefighter whose only source of an iota of emotion is his job and love of protecting people. Because of how good he is at it, he gets stationed at an isolated research facility in Antarctica as a security personnel. However, his life in Antarctica changes completely when he realizes that the cold is not the only thing he’ll have to protect the researchers from.
2 I’m A Mom
An Overprotective Zombie Mother And A Human Daughter
Writers |
Leungho (Story & Art) |
---|---|
Status |
Ongoing |
If the premise of My Daughter is a Zombie is considered weirdly amusing, I’m a Mom is a manhwa that takes it one step further and quite literally reverses all the roles. Instead of a zombie daughter, the story follows a mom who turns into a zombie to protect her unborn human daughter and later raises her while being a fully transformed zombie — talk about taking inspiration from The Last of Us.
The initial few chapters of I’m a Mom give off a very slice-of-life, homely feel, but things eventually pick up the pace (especially from Season 2) and shift into a more action-adventure-centered story. The entire narrative focuses on the zombie mother’s efforts to shield her daughter from a world filled not only with undead monsters but also with human survivors who are sometimes even more dangerous than the monsters.
1 Sweet Home
An Apathetic Man Forced To Become A Hero
Writers |
Kim Carnby (Story), Hwang Young-chan (Art) |

Status |
Completed |
Sweet Home is another manhwa that got adapted into one of the most famous K-dramas of 2020. The first chapter of the manhwa was published in 2017, and after a three-year run, it concluded in 2020 with 141 chapters. While Sweet Home doesn’t explicitly use the word “zombie” to describe its creatures, their traits are essentially the same.
It follows a shut-in 18-year-old, Cha Hyun Soo, who lives alone in apartment 1410 of the Green Home apartment complex and spends his days playing video games and lazing around. However, Hyun Soo eventually starts displaying strange symptoms that cause him to have excessive nosebleeds and hallucinations. At the same time, he witnesses people in his apartment complex turn into strange flesh-eating monsters. He, with a group of survivors, has to now fend for himself against these monsters and survive.
