Cyberpunk 2 won't be released until 2028 at the earliest

We've known that a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel has been in the works at CD Projekt Red for some time. Now we know a little more about when we can expect it to get here. Take a seat, chums. I think it will take some time.

CDPR released its third quarter 2025 financial report this week, revealing that despite some very serious initial problems, Cyberpunk is becoming an even bigger hit for the studio than The Witcher 3. The report also included notes on Cyberpunk 2's development progress, confirming that it won't be released before 2028.

CDPR has a Witcher game to complete before Cyberpunk 2.

Anytime from 2028 until the end of time is a fairly long release window, but it's narrower in scope than what we knew about the Night City sequel 24 hours ago this time around. For those waiting for more Cyberpunk, it still probably won't come as much of a surprise. CDPR will probably have The Witcher 4 completed first, and the last we heard was a suggestion that the game wouldn't be released until 2027.

This would mean a new Witcher game and a new Cyberpunk coming out back to back, but that's not happening. However, development on Cyberpunk 2 appears to be progressing smoothly. SynthPotato summarized CDPR's financial report's thoughts on the sequel, including how many people are currently working on the game and when and how the studio plans to expand that number in the future.

What We Know About Cyberpunk 2 Development Timeline

Currently, 135 people are working on Cyberpunk 2, which is a significant increase compared to 116 last July. The scale of hiring for the project is expected to expand significantly starting next year, with the goal of having up to 400 people working on the game across CDPR's Poland and Boston studios by the end of 2027.

This is confirmation that as far as the official Cyberpunk 2 timeline goes so far into the future, Cyberpunk 2 will therefore not be released until at least 2028. That doesn't mean it's scheduled for release in 2028. Quite the contrary, what this means in practice is that there will be hundreds of people working on the sequel through 2027 and beyond.

The Witcher 4 - Ciri as a queer character

What this new timeline tells me more than anything is that the 2027 estimate for The Witcher 4 is still accurate. If CDPR didn't have a new Witcher game to work on, most, if not all, of their efforts would have already been focused on Cyberpunk 2. As the team grows in size from 2026 to 2027, the Witcher developers will finish out and join the Cyberpunk team.

CDPR has confirmed that Cyberpunk will get a sequel in October 2022. This means you'll have a lot of time to play before you reach the wait times experienced between the first game's announcement and release. The original Cyberpunk was announced in May 2012 and released in November 2020. This allows CDPR to avoid breaking that record until April 2031.
