Key Takeaways
-
Marvel Rivals is very similar to Overwatch. That said, we're also starting to share some of the more horrific metas in Overwatch history.
-
The GOAT meta has already seen several teams with three vanguards and three strategists.
-
Until Marvel Rivals gets some kind of role locking or queuing in place, we can expect more funky team compositions like this in the near future.
Overwatch and Marvel Rivals share quite a bit of the same DNA. At least enough to get former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra to tweet and then delete a salty post claiming to be an “Overwatch clone.” This was always going to happen, considering the two games share the same genre, but it seems that's not the only thing Marvel Rivals shares with its rival.
Many characters in Marvel Rivals function similarly to those in Overwatch. Scarlet Witch is a mix of Reaper and Moira, while Mantis is clearly a Zenyatta/Ana hybrid. So the tactics used in Overwatch will be just as effective in Marvel Rivals, and players are already using one of Overwatch's worst tactics (thanks to GamesRadar).
You Can Never Avoid Chlorine
Overwatch fans who have followed the game since day one will remember the Overwatch League's infamous GOAT era. In this era, teams used three tanks and three healers to get through their opponents, albeit very slowly. It was a real headache for the backline at the time, and eventually Blizzard had no choice but to limit the number of tanks per team.
Marvel Rivals has no such limitations, with no role queues or role locks visible. This means the GOAT meta could be back. Although it's not very common now, there are rumors that the GOAT meta is coming back (Twitter user Jonunderscor's ominous prediction:), with players such as Twitter user TheChowderhead We share the victory screen of a team that collapsed due to tactics.

The success of Marvel Rivals will depend on more than just the IP
It takes more than well-known heroes to keep people playing live service games, and Rivals is already showing that it understands this.
A YouTuber named OnlyLegs recently shared a video of one of his matches involving four tanks and two supports on his team. While it doesn't do a ton of damage, it's essentially unkillable against less coordinated or organized teams, and this has proven to be very effective.
Of course, Marvel Rivals is only the first season out of beta, so there's plenty of time left for NetEase to start making adjustments. I've personally never encountered a team of 3 Vanguards and 3 Strategists, but since I've been stuck on a team where everyone picks a duelist, I'm sure we'll end up with some sort of role queue. Otherwise NetEase will accept the confusion.
