In late October, Valve reporter Tyler McVicker claimed that a Half-Life 3 trailer was rumored to be releasing in November. It wasn't long before others came forward and seemed to confirm these rumors. major Announcement is imminent.
However, most of these were not hints at Half-Life 3, but rather at three elements of new Valve hardware: the Steam Machine, frame, and controller. Nonetheless, amidst the buzz for the cuboid PC console, many insiders have also heard murmurs that Half-Life 3 will be announced in 2025, sparking the hottest week for the community since 2019.
Fans have taken heed to these reports and concocted all sorts of theories, speculating that 'HLX' will be released on November 18, the anniversary of Alyx's release and the start of an unusually dry period on the Steam store. Now that that day has come and gone, a new theory has emerged that it will be released on the first Half-Life anniversary. Again, that date came and went.
After November 22nd, all theories died down and the community's trust in these rumors began to wane. But there's still five weeks left in the year, and according to Insider Gaming senior editor Mike Straw, trailers are still coming.
“There’s a date you told me about.”
“I've heard dates, but I haven't been able to confirm them through multiple sources, and Valve has a history of doing these things they call 'canary traps' – they give out different dates and try to guess who's talking,” Straw said on the Insider Gaming podcast. “We’ve seen this happen before. They did this with Half-Life: Alyx. Many people have reported different dates. [Valve] I was feeding the dates differently. “We will not report the date until we have physical confirmation that it is a real date and not a canary trap.”
Everything I've heard is about this year. The date I heard is this year.
One of our main theories leading up to November is that Valve will reveal Half-Life 3 in a huge reveal at The Game Awards next month, following a cryptic tease from Geoff Keighley. However, as Straw notes, Keighley acts like this: “There are trends in gaming and he randomly posts teasers of whatever the trend is to build hype for his game.”
Several leakers, insiders, and reporters have emphasized that it's very unlikely that Half-Life 3 will come out at The Game Awards. Like Rockstar, Valve likes to do its own thing. “I would be really surprised if it wasn’t so. [Keighley’s] “Last week we signed a deal with Valve to reveal Half-Life 3 at The Game Awards,” Straw explained. “If it was going to be revealed at The Game Awards, what I could see was Valve announcing it earlier and then saying, ‘Hey, we’ll show you more at The Game Awards.’ I don’t see it being announced at The Game Awards.”
Straw likewise says he's never heard “anything” about Shadowdrop.
Various leakers from various fields covering the wider gaming industry, PlayStation, and specializing in Valve are taking the firm stance that Half-Life 3's announcement is still on track for 2025. It certainly looks like we're in the groove. So don't give up hope just yet. We'll find out soon, with just over a month left.
