When it comes to spectacle in Elden Ring Nightreign, Caligo, the Fissure in the Fog, certainly does not disappoint in his Everdark Sovereign form: the Miasma of the Night. He brings the cold dark of the night to the table, and only those who come prepared will weather its freezing bite.
But the cold is not the only danger. Ice, it seems, is sturdier than it appears, and unless you have the means to melt or shatter it, you’ll be faced with a wintery bulwark the likes of which have never been seen before. Do you have what it takes to face the freezing Miasma of the Night?

Only Fire and Strike can get through the bulky defenses of Caligo. For the special gimmick this boss brings, you’ll want at least one of them on each character present.
All resistances are exacerbated by the Frozen Armour that Caligo wears, further negating all damage. This armour can be broken more easily by Fire and Strike damage types.
Caligo is still normally affected by Bleed, Poison, and Rot build-ups.
Before you go galavanting into Caligo’s fight, knowledge of his weaknesses is not enough. The constant Frostbite is also an issue.
Therefore, the best strategy to prepare for Caligo is to trigger the Shifting Earth: Mountaintop. With this active, you must clear the following conditions on Day Two:
|
Troll Pair Boss (East Side) |
On the east side of the mountain, defeat the Troll Pair boss on the east side of the mountain. Take the effect that lowers Frostbite’s effectiveness. |
|---|---|
|
Flying Dragon Boss (West Side) |
On the west side of the mountain, defeat the Flying Dragon boss and take the Anti-Dragon effect buff. |
|
Mountaintop Secret |
Climb to the top of the mountain for the objective that lowers the effectiveness and damage of Frostbite further. |
|
Mountaintop Dragon |
Defeat the Mountaintop Dragon at either of its arena locations for a legendary weapon or to stack up on the buffs given above. |
The optimal strategy is to ensure you are around Level 9 by Day Two. Then, on Day Two, follow the pattern shown above and listed below:
- Lone Troll
- Flying Dragon
- Demi-Human Swordmaster
- Objective
- Mountaintop Dragon
- Crows
- Demi-Human Swordmaster
- Duo Trolls
If you are coming from the east, the optimal order is to do: 8, 7, 6, 3, 4, 5, 2, 1.
Recommended Characters
The best characters for Everdark Sovereign Caligo meet both of these requirements:
- Access to reliable Fire or Strike damage
- Ability to reach Caligo’s head or ability to deal reliable stagger
-
-
Although Wylder struggles to reach Caligo’s head, his mobility allows him to keep up with Caligo’s constant movement. Additionally, that mobility gives him constant access to Flaming Strike for reliable Fire damage.
He’s great at pick-ups and works well as a front-line tank against Caligo. His greatest asset is his quickly-charged Ultimate Art – a fire-damage Ultimate that is great at proccing staggers and armour-shatters throughout the fight.
-
Recluse and Revenant are equally effective with their high Faith scaling and ability to effectively use Seals. While Recluse has the FP regeneration, Revenant has her second summon, Frederick, for some Blunt damage.
While they both suffer from squishiness and Stamina concerns, their ability to reach Caligo in hard-to-reach places and use reliable Fire damage is highly useful.

Despite the slight Piercing resistance Caligo boasts, an Ironeye with a Fire bow will absolutely devastate this dragon for one reason: range. Being able to reach and destroy several pieces of Caligo’s armour is invaluable in this fight.
A good Ironeye will consistently place marks on Caligo while aiming shots at Caligo’s head. When that piece is gone, Ironeye can work his way down or blast them all off with his Ultimate.
Everdark Sovereign: Caligo’s Moveset
This version of Caligo is unique among Everdark Sovereigns in that the new phase attacks are largely the same as the original fight: just a new skin with similar flavour.
As such, the difficulty faced in this fight is more a battle of attrition against Caligo’s new gimmick rather than a test of learning new attacks.
Most of Caligo’s attacks unleash purple miasma with stars within; however, this appears to be a more effective, shinier version of Frost Breath attacks.
Moves from Caligo’s first encounter, like the forward Ice Breath attacks, are not included in the list above. While the Frostbite build-up is increased and the color of the frost is changed, many of his moves are mechanically identical – barring some that might have slightly increased hitboxes to be less forgiving to error. For these moves, please study our original guide.
-
Caligo’s phase transition is oddly less dangerous than it appears. Only the final explosion can deal any damage.
As this move puts on the armour, it is recommended to make the most of this attack by getting a few cheap hits in before retreating to a safe distance.
-
-
-
The most frequent and easiest to underestimate attacks in Caligo’s move pool is his Spinning Ice: Miasma. This move is especially deadly if you are staggered by an explosion, struck by a slice, and finished by a delayed burst.
While the safest place is under Caligo, it is unlikely most will make it to him. Therefore, either find a safe place in between the nodes or keep your distance.
This move, if downed teammates are outside the circle, is the best opportunity to pick them up. It has a large wind-up, and only the tail slices can reach you.

Winter Vortex is Caligo’s newest move, completely separate from any moves in the original fight. The laser he shoots gives very little warning, and the pillar’s formation requires you to stop immediately and run.
The vortex will continue to deal chip damage to all those within, but even once the initial vortex is gone, Frostbite will afflict the whole arena. You can stop this before the vortex and its effects run out by staggering Caligo.
How To Defeat Everdark Sovereign: Caligo
Caligo wants you to learn how to use the Sovereign Sigils to give you a real boost for a fight. Using your Sigils or the Rest mechanic to trigger the Mountaintop Shifting Earth is highly recommended.
As you unlock the secrets of the Mountaintop, you will gain additional resistances to Frostbite, making the effects negligible. Secondly, some will even give you Anti-Dragon effects for increased damage.
The first part of the fight is simply standard fare. Fight Caligo as you would normally in the second phase of his original fight.
However, once you reach the 60-70 percent threshold of his health, Caligo will transform into his new Everdark Sovereign form. Don’t let him get away with it for free, and get some cheap shots in first before retreating.
With his armour on, Caligo will have to be struck with Fire and Strike (Bludgeoning) damage to really feel any pain. Use one or both of these attacks to lob off his armour.
He has three main parts of armour:
- Head
- Body
- Tail
Each can have their armour destroyed to deal an extra amount of damage and temporarily stagger Caligo.
With all this in mind, the main idea behind defeating Caligo is to keep hitting the parts that remove his armour. A good strategy, in a full team, can be to always have one on the head while the other two focus on the body and tail.
This armour can be regenerated each time Caligo repeats his Phase Transition move.
In this process, some might get knocked down. The best moves to get them back up are:
- Spinning Ice: Miasma
- Frozen Armour
If at lower health, you can also get away with picking up teammates during the Frozen Night Assault, making sure you listen for Caligo’s incoming charge.
Eventually, you’ll down Caligo by knocking the scales off this beast. In return for your efforts, you will unlock the rights to his exclusive Relic.
