Legacy Kollection will have no lobbies or cross-play at launch.

Today marks the release of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, an impressive compilation of one of gaming's most iconic series. This is cause for celebration, but unfortunately many people were left burned by Digital Eclipse, as the studio revealed last night that public and private lobbies would not be available at launch.

That means the only way to matchmake right now is through quick play, where you're paired up with a completely random player. Not only does this mean you can't play with friends online, it's become a huge hit on the tournament scene, causing some fans to be reluctant to buy the collection until a future update, and some even canceling their pre-orders entirely.

YouTuber Mike Hollow claimed that “most people who grew up on Mortal Kombat are over 30 or 40 years old and don't have time to go to their friends' houses and play the game that often.” “They have responsibilities and dependents. They have jobs and families. I want you to get back to reality.”

Waiting until the last minute to reveal that there will be no online lobbying is really lame… For example, I'm glad they came, but it's likely that many grassroots online events will have to be postponed – @KaiuswithaK.

YouTuber and competitor J Gleez said “there were a lot of deceptive business practices” because pre-orders were made long before these plans were put in place. “You refused to answer direct questions about online and its features until 12 hours before launch,” he said. “A lot of people won’t even see these updates and will expect these mods to be included in the game because they’ve been an industry standard for 20 years.”

The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection FAQ makes no mention of cross-platform play.

Not only will private lobbies be missing at launch, Digital Eclipse's head of production Stephen Frost revealed in September that cross-platform play would also not be supported at launch. Some were hoping to see this feature introduced in a future update, but there's no mention of it in the 'Coming Soon' tab in the new FAQ, which only adds to the frustration among fans.

Another MK title lacking BASIC features at launch… – @HellaLarry13.

“Can Warner Bros. Games stop rushing out MK games and let the developers cook?” Asked @TheMetalP. “Releasing these games without basic features makes even the most successful gaming IPs look like a joke.”

It's safe to say that the collection is off to a rocky start, but hopefully cross-platform play will address some of these concerns in future updates, along with lobbies and even ranked matches.

We've reached out to Digital Eclipse for comment and will update the article accordingly.
