Soulslike fans are in for a treat these days, as Dark Souls and Bloodborne fans attempt to tap into what makes them so passionate about the genre. Through this, we've seen games with varying degrees of success. Lords of the Fallen is one of those titles that finds its own community, at least enough to warrant a sequel.
However, a recent social media post has influenced fans a lot in the wrong way. On Twitter, the Lords of the Fallen team said the game has been “carrying the torch” for Soulslike for the past two years, which many believe is dismissive of other games in the genre. Soul-loving fans are roasting Lords of the Fallen for this. The team responded and claimed that the original post was just an outrage bait.
Lords Of The Fallen angers Soullike fans, team claims it was bait for outrage
“Are you carrying the torch? Dude, it's not even in the top five, even excluding FromSoftware games,” reads one of the replies.
“As a game, ‘carrying the torch’ is not complete**,” says another.
“I know you all are engaged farming but you are not Elden Ring,” reads another response.
After all this backlash, follow-up tweets attempted to salvage the situation and give the impression that the team wasn't bothered by all of this. Lords of the Fallen's response reads, “We were tempted to retrace the beginning of Rage Bait here, but the answer was too creative.” “Nothing beats a good roast when it comes to delusional toasts!”
Lords of the Fallen was generally well-received upon release, but it's gone in a strange direction since then. Perhaps to increase player base and reviews on Steam, CI Games CEO Marek Tyminski conducted a Twitter poll on whether or not to change character creator wording from body type A/B to male/female. Ryan Hill, the company's global marketing director, also accused other studios of putting a “social or political agenda” into their games, despite their political motivations for removing “body types” from games. Since this has thrust Lords of the Fallen into a culture war, it has meant that many people see the game as being 'on their side', giving it some vocal supporters. However, the opposite is true as others take the opportunity to mock the game.
In any case, Lords of the Fallen 2 is expected to release at some point next year.
