Key Points
- Since beating Sega, Nintendo has virtually stayed out of the “console wars.”
- Big N wants to continue with this, as Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that he wants no involvement in it.
- This fact was revealed in an interview with the Nintendo Museum. Miyamoto hopes that through this, the audience will gain a better understanding of Nintendo.
Nintendo veteran and Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said in a recent interview for the Nintendo Museum that the company has no desire to get involved in any console wars.
Ever since the advent of video game consoles, there have been “console wars,” a term used when fans of one system argue over another. The oldest example is PlayStation vs. Xbox, a fight that has been going on for generations and seems like it will never end.
What’s funny is that, despite the console wars being centered around Microsoft and Sony’s machines, they seem to completely ignore the one competitor that has been outpacing them in recent years: Nintendo. The Switch is one of the most popular consoles of all time, but most people don’t seem to think about it at all when they talk about competition. Nintendo is more than happy to continue that.
Nintendo doesn't want to get involved in the console wars
Over the past few days, Nintendo has started marketing its upcoming Nintendo Museum, a new museum opening (apparently) in Ujikokura that focuses on the history of Nintendo. As Twitter user Stealth40k points out, Famitsu recently had the chance to speak with legendary Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto about the creation of the exhibit and why it was created that way.
When asked why the Nintendo Museum came to be, Miyamoto explained that it was a long story, but that he wanted others to understand why Nintendo made things the way they did. This also brings up the interesting point that Miyamoto wants nothing to do with the console wars and Big N.
Miyamoto said he hopes visitors will come away from the museum with a better understanding of Nintendo and not get caught up in the “game wars” that focus on high specs and performance improvements for each console. Nintendo laughed it off, saying the company will continue to create its own unique products.
I hope they see it and understand Nintendo. I hope they understand it this way and don't drag Nintendo into the “game war” about how to improve the performance of high-end and game consoles. – Shigeru Miyamoto
Considering that Nintendo's output has always been focused on creating new and interesting things rather than going after power, this statement from Miyamoto is not surprising. It's a very definitive statement that shares exactly what he thinks about the situation, and I hope more people take it to heart.
