When I was tasked with adapting Paizo's iconic TTRPG setting into a game; Starfinder: Afternoon Light Developer Epictellers Entertainment knew the characters had to come first. The core of a good tabletop gaming session is the players and the characters they create. When a tabletop game adapts to a video game format, recruitable companions take on the roles of fellow players. Inspired by titles like: Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and baldur's Gate 3, team behind Starfinder: Afternoon Light We worked hard to create a memorable cast of characters for players to adventure with.
Ahead of launch Starfinder: Afterlight In a hugely successful Kickstarter, the team showed off reveal trailers for several of the game's companions. In this way, four companions were revealed: Kole Stryker, Tycho, Lu-323, and Sterling. Additionally, to celebrate its Kickstarter debut, it featured intrepid astronaut Captain Khali (Carolina Ravassa). Ricard Pillosu, co-founder of Epictellers Entertainment, spoke to Game Rant about the process of creating each companion, the inspiration behind it, and the themes that focus the story.
Kole and Lu were inspired by movies and comics.
Pillosu revealed that Kole (Fred Tatasciore) and Lu (Melissa Medina) were some of the first characters created for the game. Kole was developed by writer Isabel Perez, who was inspired to give him an aspiring action star personality after seeing the film. American Ninja. Perez came up to him and said, “This is so corny. I love it.” Starfinder.” The result was Collet, a Vesk soldier with dreams of becoming an action star in the 1980s. Fans have already compared the character to: guardians of the Galaxy, Pillosu admitted that this wasn't what the team had initially intended, but he was very happy to hear it.
Felix Rios, another writer at Epictellers Entertainment, took inspiration from the comics and created the android Lu-323. Battle Angel Alita. Lu is a character whose story revolves around the theme of free will, Pillosu explained. She constantly questions how much of her personality and behavior is her true self and how much is her programming. Describing Lu, Pillosu said:
“Every time [Lu] When she does something, she's second-guessing herself. “Am I doing this because this is my programming?” Even romance. If she approaches you, she's thinking, 'No, maybe that's just my programming to make me seduce you.' She thinks, “I want to know if that person is me or not.” She asks how our background defines us.”
Sterling and Tycho became early fan favorites.
The reveal trailer revealed two other recruitable companions. Tycho (Inel Tomlinson), a Ysoki agent, and Sterling (James Alexander), a human Borai Solarian. Pillosu said Tycho has become an unexpected fan favorite since his debut. “People really like Tico,” he laughed. “We think he’s super cool, but people think he’s a lot cooler than we think.” Fans have already approached Pillosu and his fellow Epictellers co-founder Albert Jane, suggesting that they should create an animated series following the adventures of Kole and Tycho. Fans feel that the two have excellent comic chemistry, and many want to see them work together in the game.
Meanwhile, Sterling gained popularity for his affable and gentlemanly personality, and some fans immediately singled him out as a romance option. Sterling was a character that Pillosu and the team struggled with during development. Because they were concerned that it would be a traditionally gentlemanly character.Kingsman in space” — is unlikely to resonate with modern audiences. The character went through various iterations and designs before the team at Epictellers Entertainment found one they liked. However, since the response to Sterling was generally positive and many people were already drawn to his appearance, Pillosu's The concerns seem unfounded.
There is at least one more recruitable companion that hasn't been revealed yet, as well as several important NPCs and other characters. The team will reveal more in the future as the game's Kickstarter progresses and will enter Early Access in 2026.
