For the first time since September 2016 nintendo was not hosting Direct during the month of September. August saw the Nintendo Partner Showcase and Indie World, but neither showcase centered around Nintendo's upcoming game lineup. Why there wasn't one is anyone's guess. But it could range from having nothing to show to the company being too busy behind the scenes with the upcoming reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, which is scheduled to take place before March. 31st, 2025.
This doesn't mean there won't be a Nintendo Direct before the end of the year, but for whatever reason, Nintendo hasn't been able to hold a Nintendo Direct in a month that has consistently featured major shows over the past eight years. Last September's Nintendo Direct was for 2023 and Nintendo showed off games like the anticipated remake. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Doorprincess peach showtimeAnd the second wave splatoon 3 There are many DLCs and more.
In theory, Nintendo could shadowdrop a Nintendo Direct on September 30th. If this happens, this story will be updated. But at this point it feels very unlikely. If Nintendo had done that, it would have been the most recent September Direct, with most of it happening around mid-month.
Traditionally, these Nintendo Directs are the Big N's last major showcase of the year. Indie World, Mobile Direct, or Super Nintendo World Directs took place yesterday, but no major first-party showcases took place. . Perhaps August's Indie World was to make room for a larger Nintendo Direct later this year, but that's pure speculation. All fans can do now is wait for Nintendo to come forward and announce the event. Of course, if there is an event this year. It's unlikely there will be a major first-party Nintendo Direct this year, but this is officially uncharted territory.

The last September without a Nintendo Direct was 2015. This year's absence marks the eighth consecutive year the event has been discontinued. Of course, there would be no point in forcing the company to check September's boxes if Nintendo isn't ready. Nintendo may return to normal next year with Direct in September 2025, but it will be more doubtful than it has been over the past eight years.
Of all the possible explanations, the one that makes the most sense is that Nintendo is working hard to get Nintendo Switch 2 ready. In this case, fans can forgive many of the Switch 2 leaks because they sound incredibly promising. Time will tell, but at least this part of Nintendo history is over.
