The greatest rivalry in Sonic history

Sonic the Hedgehog was designed to be a cooler version of Mario. Faster, sharper and more honest, the series thrives on controversy. Sonic's campaign as Mario's rival was short-lived and he now wants to face him at the Olympics, but the Blue Blur continues to be a beloved character.

Due to Sonic's more direct characterization, the series' rivalry is less about the battle between good and evil. They're about competition. Even though he ends up saving the world, the hedgehog's biggest rivals are those who challenge him on a personal level. The same goes for his friends. The most persuasive content is as follows:

Sonic VS Jet

As is the case with most of the series since 2000, Sonic Riders is a game that is disparaged by critics and defended by fans. The dark horse debutant is Jet, a trash-talking, swindler whose team uses sabotage to win the Hoverboard Grand Prix.

Sonic is the perfect foil for Jet. He is also confident and pushy, but he doesn't cheat to win. The two end up working as allies as the stakes rise, and in the end their rivalry becomes tolerant rather than simple hostility.

Tails VS Eggman

By the release of Sonic Adventure 2, Eggman had long since become the series' ultimate villain. He often becomes a mid-card antagonist, and even aids Sonic and his friends when the true world-destroyer emerges.

One of the highlights of Sonic Adventure 2 is Tails' evolution. Often facing Eggman in single combat, Tails is forced out of his comfort zone as Sonic's sidekick and becomes a hero in his own right. Eggman initially underestimated Tails, but by the time they had their rematch, he came to respect him as a suitable opponent.

Eggman is no longer an effective villain, but we have to give it to him. The guy is good with nuts and bolts. Realizing that he could not defeat Sonic on his own terms, Eggman created Metal Sonic, a machine designed to be as fast as his archenemy while being more ruthless.

Metal Sonic has become Sonic's biggest threat since the series launched. Cold and emotionless, he was easier to take seriously than the shy Eggman. He is the final boss of Sonic Heroes. His rivalry with Sonic has faded away in recent years, mainly appearing in spinoffs.

Shadow VS Mephiles

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

The 2006 reboot of Sonic the Hedgehog was once ridiculed for its absurd story of a romance between a human princess and a hedgehog. One of the better aspects of the campaign is the rivalry between Shadow and Mephiles. At this point, Shadow is no longer a villain. This is Mephiles, the basis for the creation of Shadow.

He tries to get Shadow to join the dark side, showing him a future where humanity betrays him. However, Shadow refuses, saying he can create his own destiny. Perhaps he was hoping for a timeline that included Sonic x Shadow Generations.

Sonic VS Eggman

When Sonic debuted in 1991, Eggman was Mario's Bowser. These days he's closer to Donkey Kong. That doesn't change the intensity of their rivalry in the first few games. Despite appearing consistently in almost every level, a rarity for most video game bosses, Eggman felt mean-spirited.

Eggman, who traps forest animals to create robots, seeks the power of the Chaos Emeralds. But he can't hash it out because Sonic always stops him. Now, 30 years later, it's clear that Eggman's dream of world domination will never come true. But that doesn't stop him from trying.

Knuckles VS Rouge

Knuckles is tasked with protecting the Master Emerald. Rouge likes shiny jewels and wants that. The two don't get along, which makes them perfect candidates for a buddy movie. This is basically the plot of the Sonic Adventure 2 campaign.

When two people become trapped in space, they begin to open up to each other. Rouge gives Knuckles a piece of the Master Emerald they picked up and Knuckles apologizes if he hurt her. Of course, the two disguise their unrequited love for each other as teasing and disgust, but they become much more polite from then on.

Putting robotics aside for a while, Eggman decided that the best way to get the blue hedgehog in Sonic 3 was to face off against other spiny mammals. Knuckles, coincidentally the guardian of the Master Emerald, was a very gullible person. Once Eggman is convinced that Sonic is a bad guy, Knuckles is willing to accept him.

The echidna is more than a match for Sonic in terms of strength, if not speed. Sonic 3 was the enemy for the first and last time. Because Knuckles joined Sonic after finding out he had been tricked. Despite their subsequent friendship, feelings of envy still remain. Sonic can go wherever he wants and do whatever he wants, while Knuckles is bound to duty.

Sonic VS Shadow

The odds of beating Sonic in a typical race are at best 25%. But Shadow is the ultimate life form and he is no ordinary creature. When he appeared in Sonic Adventure 2, the closest the blue hedgehog came to being overtaken.

When the world faces a greater threat, the two acquiesce and become Super Saiyans together, resulting in perhaps the greatest Sonic moment of all time. Backed by the Crush 40 soundtrack Live and Learn, they battle threats greater than 100 Eggmen. By the time the task is completed, a bond has formed. However, the two still compete in friendly fashion to this day.
