6 Best Urban Fantasy Comics, Ranked
Fans of the urban fantasy subgenre have a variety of options when it comes to comics to choose from. Here are some of the best ones you should definitely check out.
These guys are some of the most polarizing characters in the series, with some fans loving them despite their flaws, while others cry out for blood whenever they appear. Let’s take a look at this group of misfits trying to survive in a world plagued by Oddities.
6 Araragi Koyomi
The male protagonist often crosses the line
- First appearance: “Bakemonogatari” – Episode 1
- age: 17
- category: Half vampire
The main character of this drama was a normal human until his third year of high school when he met the vampire Kissshot and sucked her blood. Since then, he has become a vampire, but he has not completed the complete transformation and returned to being human again, but he has not given up his vampire powers because he is still tied to the vampire who changed him (because she lives in his shadow). A walking contradiction, he is a loner by nature and says that he cannot trust other humans, but he unconditionally trusts others and will help anyone in need wherever he sees them.

Monogatari is back and in top form.
'Monogatari' is back without a main character. Maybe it's because of the long hiatus, but it looks and sounds better than ever.
But perhaps the attitude that gave him his worst reputation is his creepy appearance and seemingly perverted obsession. Other characters, such as Senjougahara and his siblings, have pointed out that this is his main flaw. While many fans love his quirky and spontaneous, yet cold and solitary personality, others have distanced themselves from the show because of Koyomi's attitude. He is a very polarizing character, always walking a thin line between being right and being miserable.
5 Hitagi Senjogahara
Some people say she has no charm.
- First appearance: “Bakemonogatari” – Episode 1
- age: 17
- category: Strange Victim (Heavy Stone)
Hitagi Senjougahara was an average student, and in some ways a high achiever, always trying to please her father. But something inside her broke. She was possessed by a strange entity called the Heavy Stone Crab, and her life changed forever. The crab made her weightless, and as a result, she became incredibly vulnerable to gravity, which caused her many accidents. She always carried a ton of cutting tools with her to add weight to her body (like some kind of strange holding bag). She met Araragi by chance, and he saved her life, but until that moment, she had little interest in him.
Some fans love her romantic side, taking Araragi to see the stars, just like she used to do with her dad. Others, on the other hand, say it's a messed up Electra complex. She's also very lonely and has a detached personality similar to Koyomi. She's jealous of some people, and for good reason: she knows that Araragi tends to surround himself with other women, especially vampires who live in his shadow. While fans point out that Hitagi and Koyomi are the perfect couple, others cry that this love is just a facade. Either way, Senjougahara is an important part of Nisio Ishin's work, and the series wouldn't be the same without her.
4 Kanbaru Suruga
Toxic and selfish personality
- First appearance: Bakemonogatari – Episode 6
- age: 17
- category: Strange Victim (Monkey Paw)
Kanbaru Suruga is the epitome of jealousy and obsession, never being true to her feelings, always lying to herself and others. When she became possessed by the Monkey Paw Oddity, Kanbaru began to approach Araragi more aggressively, initially stating that she distrusted his relationship with her friend Hitagi Senjougahara. In fact, she loved her best friend, and her guilt turned into contempt and jealousy, which became the cause of her obsession.
This led Kanbaru to try to seduce Araragi several times in order to prove that she was not worthy of Hitagi's trust, but in reality, it was for her own selfish purposes. Her fear of always being second-best led to her obsession with race and Hitagi and Araragi's relationship, which interfered with Kanbaru's life. Araragi helped her selflessly, but she never stopped joking that she “stole him” from Hitagi. Perhaps one thing Araragi and Kanbaru have in common is their love of Senjougahara, but that alone isn't enough to make fans dislike this character any less. Oddly enough, others love her because of her interactions with Koyomi, which are mostly funny.
3 Meme Oshino
You're so self-centered that it's annoying to even look at you.
- First appearance: Bakemonogatari – Episode 1
- age: Unknown (about 30 people)
- category: Weirdness Expert
A nomad, hippie, disheveled middle-aged man who claims to be an Oddity expert, a protector of order and balance. A sort of paranormal investigator. He often provides guidance and assistance to Araragi and others affected by Oddity, but his true self remains a mystery. He often displays a laid-back attitude and confidence, which is sometimes unnatural and sometimes unbearable to watch.
He has a bad habit of coming and going at will, disappearing when Araragi needs advice the most, and appearing when he isn't called. Some fans suspect that he is actually an Oddity or a vampire who feeds on chaos, which is why Kiss-shot “respects” him. Some fans dislike the seemingly superficial and annoying character being forced to have a mysterious aura, and have mixed feelings about whether or not he is useful to the plot.
2 Nadeko Sengoku
Some people think she's cute despite being a miserable being.
- First appearance: Bakemonogatari – Episode 9
- age: 14
- category: Strange Victim (Snake God)
Nadeko Sengoku appears as a naive and seemingly kind childhood friend of Araragi and his younger sister Tsukihi, but she is also one of the most controversial characters in the series. No one suspected that this naive child was slowly turning into a snake-like deity of a nearby temple, using misinformation to dabble in the supernatural. Some say she was a victim of circumstance, while others say that her true nature was finally revealed through a curse and later evolution into a deity. A selfish and conceited person, she will do anything to get what she wants.
Nadeko remains a sort of “idol” among fans. BakemonogatariAt the same time, she is one of the worst villains in the series. In fact, no character in the series is purely evil or good, they all act according to the situation. But of all of them, Nadeko is the one who blatantly displays the worst traits. She always hides her true self behind a “cute” exterior, and compromises with what others want instead of speaking up until her pent-up anger explodes and hurts everyone around her. She also does not truly love Araragi, she is just infatuated with him, and her desire to “have” him as her boyfriend reflects her selfishness, as she knows full well that he is dating Senjougahara.
1 Ononoki Yotsugi
You either love her or you hate her
- First appearance: Nisei Monogatari – Episode 9
- age: Unknown
- category: Oddity (Shikigami) – Oddity Expert
Ononoki Yotsugi is a golem-like Oddity created to live among humans. Unable to express emotions, she always wears a blank mask and repeats the most vulgar and foolish actions to show some kind of “personality”. It's not that she has no emotions, the problem is that she can't express emotions like a normal human. Of course, she doesn't.
Some fans have loved her ever since she appeared on the show. Nisei MonogatariOthers find her every appearance unbearable and annoying. She is definitely the most dissonant character in the series. Her plot utility is always questionable, and fans are divided between outright rejection and unconditional love.
