Nintendo and Game Freak have been running quite a leaky ship over the years, but the latest Pokemon leak is arguably the most disastrous. Not only has the name of the next-gen game Pokemon Wind & Waves been reportedly leaked, but other key details such as the series release schedule and new projects have been shared on social media.
Nintendo and Game Freak clearly have huge security issues right now. This is quite surprising given that Nintendo is notorious for cracking down on anyone they believe has done them harm. There's literally a team of ninjas responsible for tracking down those who leak secret information, but if the latest leak is the result of their efforts, it's clear they'll need to return to the dojo for more training.
When something big happens with Nintendo, it's always worth checking out what former Nintendo marketing chiefs Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang have to say about the situation. Having been inside for a while, they usually have some interesting insight into what Nintendo might be thinking about during a crisis. But this time, the two are much more critical of how Nintendo is addressing the leak.
The Pokemon leak prompted a former Nintendo marketer to say security needs to be “extended.”
In the latest episode of Kit & Krysta (thanks to GamesRadar), the duo talks about the recent Pokémon leak and what Nintendo can do to prevent more from happening in the future. Ellis begins by explaining that these leaks are likely extremely “harmful” to Nintendo, and while he feels a bit sorry for them, the company needs to “really look in the mirror” and realize they're not very good at keeping things secret.
“Based on our own experience dealing with leaks at Nintendo, it seems like whatever happens, it reinforces the same potential leak location,” Ellis says. “And they keep tightening and tightening the same places. But there may be other places that are not being addressed or are not being tightened and there are increasing vectors of leakage.”
Ellis went on to say that Nintendo needs to “expand the scope of how we think about this” and that leaks won't come from where Nintendo expects. Yang also adds to the conversation by revealing some of the leak prevention measures implemented while at the company, including limiting communication with personal and work devices. But Yang said this was a “perceived false security” measure that did not actually help.
