Almost eight years after the release of Warhammer: Vermintide 2, developer Fatshark has no plans for a sequel. Instead, the focus is on further developing the flagship co-op game.
“We can always take the campaign in different directions as we explore the Warhammer Fantasy universe,” design director Joakim Setterberg told PC Gamer. “There’s still a lot of work to do, including expanding on what we’re already doing, like Chaos Wastes.”
The team is planning to release more major content to expand Vermintide's already expansive universe, as well as improve the core experience to address some of the community's key concerns. “There are a lot of gameplay items that players will want to revisit or 'fix' rather than 'fix', but we have a slightly rough system in place. We can tweak that at any time. I would say there's still a lot of work to be done in terms of quality of life, so Vermintide keeps going.”
Fatshark may be teasing Vermintide 2's sprint button.
To get an idea of what these tweaks might look like, it's worth noting that Fatshark also developed Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, a similarly brutal co-op game. Although the focus is on Grimdark firearms rather than Vermintide's melee and personal melee weapons.
“We introduced some really cool sprinting mechanics in Darktide, which is one of the things that always blows my mind when switching between games. [when] Test it out,” he said. “Does the Shift key do anything? why? It's really crazy.”
It's not exactly confirmed, but it sounds like the team is looking to Vermintide's not-so-distant 40k cousin for ideas on how to improve the experience. So perhaps we'll see mechanics like sprinting backported between games to bring Vermintide's movement up to par.
Meanwhile, Fatshark has revealed that the Reik-inspired Death on the Reik map will arrive for free in Vermintide 2 on November 20th to celebrate the original game's 10th anniversary. As of now, Hallow's End (or Geheimnisnacht in-universe) runs until November 2nd and brings new cosmetics, double XP, event quests, and more.
