If you're reading this, I hope you like video game movies. Because just last week, a sequel to A Minecraft Movie was announced for 2027, along with a rather creepy and cryptic short film from Nintendo as part of Nintendo Pictures' plans. A third Mortal Kombat movie has now been confirmed.
However, there is one very small problem. Mortal Kombat 2 hasn't been released yet.
As long as there's no Cole Young, I like Mortal Kombat 3
As Deadline first reported, New Line Cinema, one of Warner Bros.' A major studio is planning to turn the Mortal Kombat franchise into a trilogy. Jeremy Slater, who wrote Mortal Kombat 2, is expected to rewrite the three installments.
Deadline's sources say WB is “very high” on Mortal Kombat 2, a film that was supposed to be released this month but was instead delayed to May 2026. Considering the first film didn't set the box office on fire, that's a lot of confidence.
This confidence was further boosted by the massive support for the trailer, which included the film's mature content, with 107 million views in 24 hours as of Deadline, the highest ever for a red band trailer, and a presumed Rated-R rating.
Just as the film was confirmed at Deadline, it was also confirmed at New York Comic Con, making it as official as possible.
Slater told the crowd, “Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are very happy with this movie. They're very excited. They're so confident there's a huge fan base waiting for this movie that they've already hired me to write the next installment of Mortal Kombat.”
As I said above, stay tuned for more video game movies because the train isn't stopping anytime soon.
