David Marcus was a scientist involved in Project Genesis, a top secret research and development project that developed the Genesis Device. This device was able to completely reform the planet's molecules, transforming it into a planet habitable for humanoids. David took part in Project Genesis with his mother, Carol Marcus, a brilliant scientist, and James T. Kirk's former lover.

David never knew his father because his mother Carol insisted that Kirk was not a part of his life. She knew their relationship wouldn't work out in the long run, and she didn't want David to spend his life chasing his father's attention by exploring the stars. Kirk respected her wishes, even though he did not want to, and distanced himself from his son.

When they first met, David was deeply distrustful of Kirk. He believed that Kirk was a typical soldier who wanted to use the Genesis device for nefarious purposes. But as they got to know each other, David realized that his father's ideals were based on peaceful exploration rather than violent destruction. In the end, David was proud to be Kirk's son and told him as much.

To their surprise, they discover a young Vulcan boy on the planet.

When Spock finally dies Khan's WrathThe Enterprise transported his buried body to the planet Genesis. Finding the Vulcan boy, David deduces that the Genesis Device reorganized Spock's molecular structure, turning him into a child again. Unfortunately, a corner was cut when David created the Genesis Device, leaving the planet unstable. The planet is deteriorating, and young Spock's growth is inextricably linked to the planet's deterioration. As conditions on the planet worsen, Spock ages quickly and painfully.

Saavik and David are captured by the Klingons while trying to find a way to escape the planet with Spock. The Klingons hear about the Genesis Device and decide to get their hands on it to destroy rather than create new planets. The Genesis Device rearranges all of the planet's material to create a habitable environment, so if it explodes on an inhabited planet, all life there will be wiped out.

David and Saavik try to convince the Klingons that Project Genesis failed because it had unstable consequences, but the Klingons are not interested. They were determined to obtain all information about Genesis by any means necessary.

Kirk and his skeleton crew TOS The regulars were already heading to Planet Genesis to retrieve Spock's body and move his Katra from Bones. When they arrive, they encounter Klingons searching for the Genesis Device. The Klingon captain attempts to get information about Project Genesis from Kirk, and when Kirk refuses, the Klingon captain threatens to kill the Starfleet prisoners one by one until he gets the information he needs.

David tries to convince his father not to give up the information, as he is convinced the Klingons are bluffing. He doesn't believe in killing people to get information about a malfunctioning device. Unfortunately he was wrong.

When the Klingon captain gives the order to kill one of the hostages, the Klingon guards pick on Savik. When one of the Klingons holds a knife to his throat, David lunges at him. They struggle for a while, but David has always been a scientist, not a fighter. The Klingon stabs him and David dies.

Kirk is shocked and takes all his anger out on the Klingon crew. After killing the entire crew, he returns and sits next to his son's body. When Kirk asks Saavik what happened, she assures Kirk that David gave his life to save her and Spock, and that he died a hero.
